Every year thousands of students from across India appear for the Sainik School entrance exam — but only a few hundred get selected. The difference between those who pass and those who don't is not talent. It is preparation. In this guide, we break down exactly how to prepare — step by step.
1What is the Sainik School Entrance Exam?
The Sainik School entrance exam, officially called the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE), is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) every year. It is held for admission to Class 6 and Class 9 in all 33 Sainik Schools across India.
The exam tests students on four subjects. Class 6 students appear for a 300-mark paper and Class 9 students for a 400-mark paper.
Mathematics
Arithmetic, geometry, basic algebra, number systems
Class 6: 150 marks
English Language
Grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, sentence formation
Class 6: 50 marks
General Knowledge
Current affairs, science, geography, history, civics
Class 6: 50 marks
Intelligence Test
Logical reasoning, pattern recognition, mental ability
Class 6: 50 marks
💡 Important Note
After clearing the written exam, selected students must also pass a Medical Test and an Interview. So physical fitness and personality development must go hand in hand with academic preparation.
2When Should Preparation Begin?
This is the most common question parents ask. The honest answer is: the earlier, the better.
✓18–24 months before exam: Ideal start. Covers full syllabus, multiple revisions, builds strong foundation
✓12 months before exam: Good start. Enough time to cover everything properly with regular practice
✓6 months before exam: Possible but requires intensive coaching and daily 3–4 hours of study
✓Less than 6 months: Crash course is possible, but chances are lower without a strong base
At Divine Sainik Academy, we recommend starting preparation in Class 4 itself for Class 6 entry — giving your child a full year or more of solid preparation.
3Subject-Wise Preparation Strategy
Mathematics — This is the highest-scoring subject (150 marks for Class 6). Focus on: tables up to 20, fractions, decimals, percentage, ratio and proportion, simple geometry. Solve at least 30 maths problems every single day without calculator. Speed and accuracy are both important.
English — Many students from Bikaner and rural Rajasthan find English challenging. Start with basic grammar — tenses, articles, prepositions. Read one short English passage every day. Build vocabulary by learning 5 new words daily. Don't try to memorize — understand the rules.
General Knowledge — This cannot be studied the night before. Read a children's newspaper or GK book every day for at least 15 minutes. Focus on: Indian states and capitals, important rivers, famous personalities, basic science facts, and current events from the past 6 months.
Intelligence / Reasoning — This section surprises many students. It tests logical thinking, not bookwork. Practice pattern completion, number series, mirror images, coding-decoding and analogy questions every day. The more you practice, the faster and more accurate you become.
"The student who solves 1,000 practice questions will always outperform the student who reads 10 books — practice beats theory every time."
4Daily Study Schedule
Here is a sample daily study plan for a student preparing for Sainik School Class 6 entry:
Time | Activity | Duration |
6:00 – 6:30 AM | Morning revision — previous day's topics | 30 min |
School hours | Regular school | — |
4:00 – 5:30 PM | Coaching class at Divine Sainik Academy | 90 min |
6:00 – 7:00 PM | Maths practice — 30 problems | 60 min |
7:00 – 7:30 PM | English — grammar exercise or reading | 30 min |
7:30 – 8:00 PM | GK reading — newspaper or GK book | 30 min |
8:30 – 9:00 PM | Reasoning practice — 15 questions | 30 min |
💡 Weekend Rule
Every Saturday, take a full mock test of 2.5 hours under exam conditions. Review your mistakes on Sunday morning. This one habit alone can improve your score by 20–30 marks.
5Tips for Parents
Parents play a huge role in a child's exam success. Here is what you can do:
✓Create a fixed study space at home — no TV, no phone, good lighting
✓Ask your child what they studied today — this builds accountability
✓Ensure 8–9 hours of sleep every night — tired children cannot concentrate
✓Reduce screen time to maximum 30 minutes on weekdays
✓Encourage your child after every small improvement — motivation matters
✓Attend parent-teacher meetings at the coaching centre regularly
6Common Mistakes to Avoid
✗Starting too late — Many parents enroll in coaching only 2–3 months before the exam. This is not enough time.
✗Skipping mock tests — Some students only study theory and never do full timed practice tests. Huge mistake.
✗Ignoring English and GK — Students focus only on Maths and neglect other subjects. All subjects matter equally.
✗Not reviewing mistakes — Doing a mock test is useless if you don't go back and understand every wrong answer.
✗Exam fear — Anxiety on exam day can ruin months of preparation. Practice sitting for full 2.5-hour sessions regularly.
